Guitarist Juan B.H. Alegre III, aka Johnny Alegre, attended the University of the Philippines College of Music in the latter 1970s and was a founding member of the U.P. Jazz Ensemble. He studied composition with the late Dr. Eliseo Pajaro and Dr. Francisco Feliciano; musical forms and analysis with Dr. Corazon Dioquino; asian, Philippine and gamelan musics with Dr. Ruby Mangahas, Dr. Jose Maceda and Winisubroto Sunardi; and jazz theory and performance with the late Prof. Fred Robles, the late Lito Molina and Dr. Joseph Howard. He participated in instrumental clinics and creative workshops conducted by musicologist- composer Dr. Erhard Karkoshka, guitarist Ike Isaacs and composer-scholar Chou Wen-Chung.
Alegre had been involved in scores of live performing bands and studio recording sessions, spanning more than twenty years of Philippine jazz and popular music history and discography. In May 2002, Johnny Alegre formed one of Manila's highly regarded jazz groups, AFFINITY, with bassist Colby de la Calzada, drummer Koko Bermejo, pianist Elhmir Saison and saxophonist Tots Tolentino. Their first recorded work, "Stones Of Intramuros", composed by Alegre, was included in the limited edition Philippine jazz anthology CD, Adobo Jazz Vol.1. The band's self-titled album, "Johnny Alegre AFFINITY", is released in 2005 by the UK jazz label, Candid Records.
As part of the ever-evolving cultural landscape in Manila, Johnny Alegre's projects with Affinity contribute greatly to the city's unique and vibrant jazz milieu.
